Shamans_Drum.jpg(300 × 300 пикселей, размер файла: 23 КБ, MIME-тип: image/jpeg)

Redrawn version of the drawing of a shaman's drum made on a 1909-1913 expedition led by Anokhin Andrei Viktorovich, published in 1924 in Materialy po shamanstvy u altaitsev ("materials on the shamanism of the Altai people").

The central, cross-like figure represents the "Spirit-Master of the drum" (altaic Tungur-eezi). Originally, according to the siberian tradition, shaman's drum had the only one surface covered with the skin of sacrificial animal - as a usual, of the horse. There was also a wooden handle inside the drum. At the same time this handle was a kind of wooden-metal figurine, representing the Spirit-Master of the drum. So: the central figurine on our drawing is a kind of "projection" of the real handle-figurine, which was hidden inside the drum (and was invisible from that side, where the picture was made).[1]

uploader User:Erdaal] was not aware of the image source and has a history of ignoring licencing policy. Chances are this drawing was not made by Erdaal at all, and it should be considered unreferenced. The original 1924 publication (published in the Soviet Union) may or may not be in the public domain, but this is a more recent "derived work". Also, the image cannot be used encyclopedically, because it does not depict an actual shaman drum, it represents an "artist's interpretation" (where the artist is anonymous) of a depiction of an actual drum in ethnographic literature.
